CSV can move rows between systems, but it does not carry spreadsheet formatting or formulas. An XLSX copy puts the data into workbook cells for editing. Inspect dates, leading zeros and columns before treating the imported values as final.

Comma-Separated Values data
Microsoft Excel Open XML — current default format
A CSV file is text organized into records and fields; it does not declare a universal delimiter, character encoding, header meaning, or data type in the way a workbook does. Commas may separate fields, but regional exports may use semicolons. Quoted fields can contain commas and line breaks, so splitting every line on a comma is not a safe parser. An import should inspect a small sample, especially rows with quoted addresses or descriptions. If accented characters appear incorrectly, the text encoding may need attention before any XLSX is created.
Spreadsheet programs often infer numbers and dates from text. That can remove leading zeros from account or product codes, convert long identifiers to scientific notation, or reinterpret day/month order. Decide which columns are identifiers, dates, decimal values, and free text. Compare representative cells and row counts after import. A CSV has no formulas, sheet tabs, cell styles, charts, or merged headings to preserve; the new XLSX can provide those features later, but conversion alone should not invent them. The first row may be a header, data, or neither, so the workflow must not silently assume one interpretation.
An XLSX is useful when analysts need filters, several sheets, or cell formatting after importing a dataset. Save the original CSV alongside it so the raw exchange data is available if a type was misread. A downloaded XLSX should be opened in a spreadsheet application and checked against the CSV for row count, delimiter interpretation, dates, and leading-zero identifiers.
For a customer list, test a name with accents, an address containing commas, and an identifier beginning with zeros. Those rows expose encoding, quoting, and type-inference mistakes quickly. Then compare the total record count. A workbook that opens without an error can still be wrong if a quoted line break was treated as a new row or a blank column shifted adjacent values.
No. It is a single text table; a workbook can later have multiple sheets.
A spreadsheet may infer a number. Preserve identifier columns as text and check output.
Yes. Proper CSV parsing must respect quoting rules.
A CSV contains no cell styles to transfer.
